Apexogenesis is a procedure that addresses the shortcomings involved with capping the inflamed dental pulp of an incompletely developed tooth. The goal of apexogenesis is the preservation of vital pulp tissue so that continued root development may occur and to minimize any further damage.
Do I Need Apexogenesis Performed?
If, during a comprehensive exam, your dentist finds incompletely developed teeth that require endodontic intervention (sometimes due to extensive cavities or traumatic injury), they'll perform an assessment of the pulp (the part in the center of a tooth made up of living connective tissue and cells). Then, the degree of tooth development will be determined to develop a treatment plan for long-term tooth retention.

Apexogenesis FAQs
Apexogenes helps preserve the vitality of a tooth's root pulp and the development of the root itself. It helps promote root growth and formation in immature teeth, allowing the open apex to close.
Apexogenesis is necessary when parts of the pulp of an underdeveloped tooth are damaged and require assistance with root growth. Your dentist will perform an exam to determine if you would benefit from apexogenesis.
Apexogenesis is similar to a root canal. Your dentist will apply local anesthesia to the area around the affected tooth. Once it has taken effect, they will make a small hole in the tooth to reach the decayed portion of the pulp and remove it. After all the dead pulp is removed, your dentist will add a biocompatible material, such as calcium hydroxide or mineral trioxide aggregate, to the healthy pulp. The material works to strengthen the remaining healthy pulp.
You may experience some discomfort after apexogenesis, which can be mitigated with an ice pack and over-the-counter pain medication. To promote healing, make sure you continue practicing proper dental hygiene and avoid chewing on the side of your mouth that received the procedure.
